Small Things

on

I believe it was Tolkien who wrote, “It is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life“, and that is what I endeavour to do in my Small Things posts. Today’s post is particularly simple, as I return to the blog’s roots and share a straightforward gratitude list.

As I write, there is illness and challenge in my family, and the world’s troubles rumble on. Nevertheless, as always, there are many things to be thankful for and my heart is full.

Today’s gratitude list:

* My family: Difficulties often highlight the love and warmth of family all the more. We are so fortunate to have a big, kind and caring family.

*My dog: He is getting old now, but is as much a part of our family as ever. He reminds me to slow down, to show affection, to play and to care. He gives us all so much companionship and comfort.

*Living in the countryside: Over the holidays, I have loved our routine of getting out to feed the chickens and the goats. I have taken time to look at the night sky and driven through the moors. I have been to the beach, walked beside the ocean and drunk hot chocolate looking over the dunes. On another occasion, we rode horses with our friends, the horses wearing festive tinsel around their necks, while we wrapped up warm against the wintery weather.

* Gatherings: It has been the time of year for gatherings, both planned and impromptu. Some of ours have really stayed in my thoughts this year; they felt particularly precious and poignant. On New Year’s Eve, which was cold and clear, we gathered around a bonfire with friends. On Christmas Eve, we gathered with our church for brunch, and made Christingles. My family got together a few times, and these get-togethers were filled with multi-generational exuberance and good humour.

What are you thankful for this week?
